In a previous blog, we explained “Why is Magento the #1 choice platform for e-commerce?” and we gave examples of popular websites that use this platform. By the end, we concluded that Magento beats all other platforms such as Shopify, PrestaShop, WooCommerce, OpenCart, and BigCommerce…

If you need more details about Magento: features and benefits explained plus examples: check the previous blog Magento for web development.

But is Magento the only platform that offers such a strong package of features and extensions? Let’s make a detailed comparison between Magento and other e-commerce platforms!

Magento VS Shopify

According to reviews and ratings, Shopify is the best choice for large stores that sell more than 10 different products, and Magento is the best choice for enterprise-level businesses.

Magento 2 and Shopify are both pro-level to the max. And both of their added features come with a price, and they require hiring dedicated developers to increase sales and for better marketing.

Although both e-commerce platforms are used by well-known brands, Magento still holds the bigger market share and the favor of business owners.

As mentioned in the previous blog, Magento provides full control over your stores and even makes monitoring them easier and quicker. However, Shopify does not offer such a feature, which is kinda disappointing.

With 500,000+ VS 250,000+ live websites both with an unlimited number of products, Shopify beats Magento but in terms of extensions and supported payment gateways, Magento is way ahead with 5000+ extensions VS 4000+ Shopify and 150+ supported payment gateways VS 100+ for Shopify. In case you think you’re getting carried away with picking extensions or with so many extensions you feel lost, we’re here to offer professional help.

Magento may be open-source, so it’s free to install and there is even a free community version, but the version enterprises use is a closed source and yearly-paid. Shopify offers several packages with different monthly prices, however, as an enterprise, it’s more costly to use Shopify+ since it charges $2000/month VS around $1834 (Magento2) with no transaction fees and less costly developer cost.

When it comes to themes and templates, Magento offers a wider range of themes that unlike those of Shopify, they are fully customizable. As for multi-store management, while Magento only requires a single interface, Shopify requires different accounts.

The main gap between Magento and Shopify is the B2B (business-to-business) features that Magento2 offers while Shopify still works with B2C (business-2-consumer) features.

Magento VS PrestaShop

PrestaShop is known to be user-friendly and cheap while Magento requires technical skills and maybe turn costly, but this is due to how basic PrestaShop’s functionality is face to the advanced built-in integrations Magento2 offers.

Magento seems to remain #1 in extensions, plugins, and modules offering 5000+ VS 3000+ (PrestaShop) extensions. Thanks to these numerous extensions, we can use Magento to create unique UI/UX designs for your website.

When it comes to inventory size, PrestaShop seems like a better choice for small stores with a limit of 100,000 catalog products and the closer you get to this number, the bigger the chance it could affect your website’s performance. While Magento can handle 100,000-200,000 catalog products and with the proper extensions it could go up to 500,000 products with 0 effects on the website which is great news for large stores

Magento will always be a first-class e-commerce platform due to being customized to please users and make their shopping experience addicting, which helps in marketing. Such a feature is not found in PrestaShop or other platforms, nor is the dynamic rule-based product relation. For example, personalized recommendation shopping based on age, gender, preferences, previous purchases… It even offers suggestions to misspelled search or order, in other terms the elastic search.

Security is a priority, that’s why Magento updates its security system to get rid of vulnerabilities, and this high level of security is unfortunately not found in PrestaShop that is self-hosted.

Magento VS WordPress

Starting off with some similarities, both platforms are rich with features, SEO-friendly, and backed up with a strong community. However, while WordPress is more content-oriented, Magento is exclusively dedicated to e-commerce.

Magento is more advanced than WordPress because it was made to be enterprise-level professional, which explains that unlike all the platforms mentioned, it’s not developer-friendly and requires knowledge. But it’s also the reason why tens of thousands of business/store owners from popular brands to multinational corporations choose Magento.

Both platforms make creating complex content easier, but third-party extensions are more secure in Magento than in WordPress whose functionalities are not built-in but require installing WooCommerce plugins first each one separately, even WordPress’s hosting provider doesn’t come easily, you need a Blue host account.

There is no denying that both platforms are highly capable, but Magento is more powerful when it comes to online sales thanks to its excellent already built-in package of sales features such as free shipping options, coupons which all shoppers love, customizable prices for different customer categories like retails, one-page checkout. With a gigantic amount of digital buyers, the competition is heated and Magento is a master at marketing.
