Amazon Unveils Amazing New Flying Delivery Drone “Octocopter”

Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, is known for taking risks and big bets in the world of innovation. On the “60 Minutes” program that had been aired on CBS this Sunday, he revealed what might be one of his biggest and most revolutionary product delivery service by flying robot drones, also known as “Octocopter.”

Amazon has made planned to build an army of delivery drones, which will deliver the given purchases at your doorstep within 30 minutes. On the show, he stated that the drones are unmanned vehicles that can fly and deliver packages that weigh up to 2.3 Kilos, or five pounds. This size represents approximately 86% of packages that Amazon delivers.

The service will be called “Prime Air” and comes as the company is looking to improve its efficiency to boost further growth. Amazon has already been working on the “octocopter” project in a secret research and development lab at its Seattle, Washington-based HQ for months in an effort to compete against its rivals.

Bezos added that it could take up to five years for the service to begin. He also admitted that it wouldn’t work for everything, but would be ideal for smaller items.  Amazon said, “We’ll be ready to begin our commercial operations as soon as they meet the necessary regulations from a technological point of view “.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not yet approved the use of such technology for civilian purposes. The FAA has been actively working on rules for such revolutionary aerial vehicles. Amazon hope the green light would be given as early as 2015.

“One day, Prime Air vehicles will be as common as seeing mail trucks on the road,” said Bezos. He hinted that part of the motivation behind the revolutionary drones was to ensure his company remains on the cutting edge of the retail industry.
