What was once a dream is now closer to reality? Leading electronics manufacturer Sony takes gaming a step closer to reality. After the smashing hit of the play station series, they have now come up with a virtual reality system that promises to immerse players in the virtual world.

A virtual Reality gaming System by Sony

Dubbed “Project Morpheus,” it can be easily paired with Sony’s top selling gaming console. Sony announced the roll out of the device on Tuesday at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Similar to the Kickstarter project Oculus Rift, the Morpheus is also a full-immersion Virtual Reality system that can enthrall gamers.

President of the Sony Computer Entertainment , Shuhei Yoshida said at the conference “At (Sony Computer Entertainment), we view innovation as an opportunity to build on our mission to push the boundaries of play, Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we’re looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators”

Project Morpheus makes use of a headset that lets the wearer interact with his/her surroundings through a 360 degree field vision. This enables the wearer to interact as he/she would in a real environment. The Morpheus features a visor-like headset that has 4 sensors that track the player’s head movement to interact with the camera on the Playstation.

Virtual reality is a dimension of gaming that has several gamers and developers contemplating the various possibilities. The industry has seen a shift from the regular interaction with visuals, to a VR one only in the recent days (Think Oculus rift and the like.)With technology having advanced in leaps and bounds, it is possible to experience high graphic fidelity in gaming visuals, as well.

As of now Sony is yet to give out the numbers in terms of release dates, timetables or pricing for the Morpheus. They have so far only made prototypes that would be made available to developers.

What remains to be seen is whether top-tier game developers and manufacturers would be investing the time and resources required to create games for such VR systems. Besides, these games would have to cater to particular consoles, which is another hurdle when you tally the numbers.
