Intel Launches New SoCs – the Bay Trail; Dell Among Others to Opt for The Same

After years of working on the Atom architecture, Intel took a huge leap towards ‘out of turn execution’ and unveiled its new microprocessor christened – Bay Trail.  Previously, Intel was known to turn out processors that could work wonders with mitigating power consumption but took a huge blow when it came to delivering quality performance in terms of graphics and multimedia.

In a move to strengthen its foothold in the market, Intel is back on track with these extra light chips that promise to deliver an amazing experience on tablets both from a power perspective as well as  quality performance. The Bay Trail is part of the Atom Z3000 series of System-on-chip (SoCs). This is the first time that the company has incorporated the ‘out of order execution’ and uses a one-to-one core for thread mapping to deliver a more efficient processing cutting down on idle states. The Quad core feature of the Bay Trail does not employ the regular Intel Hyper Threading. Intel has also given the architecture a 4GB system RAM delivering speeds up to DDR3-1333.  This time they have also given graphics it due attention, the chip has an Ivy Bridge graphics core rendering full compatibility with DX11. The graphics engine also features 4 Execution Units, each with a capability of 8 threads totaling to a sum of 32.  Besides this, it also supports HDMI 1.4 and eDP1.3 with a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600 alongside hardware accelerated video encode and decode engines.

Intel gave hands on experience of its new chip the Bay Trail on two 8 inch reference design Tablets that it manufactured with 2.4GHz and 2GB of DDR3L/1067 memory. One of the tablets ran on the Windows 8 and the other on Android 4.22.

With all these features, the Bay Trail has already turned several Android manufacturers to Intel. Dell is all set to release its new Tablet Under the brand name Venue which features the Bay Trail processor. Asus, Acer and Lenovo are expected to follow suit.
